A severe windstorm that swept through Galadima Village in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State on Wednesday night caused the collapse of two 330KV transmission towers along the Kainji–Birnin Kebbi power line.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the state and resilience of the region’s aging power infrastructure.
The storm, which also damaged homes and properties in the area, disrupted normal activities and left residents worried about prolonged power outages.
Malam Umar Galadima, a resident of the affected community, attributed the collapse to the poor condition of the towers.
“These materials can no longer withstand such strong winds.
“The towers are outdated and need to be replaced. We need to adopt modern methods of power transmission,” he said.
He expressed the growing frustration among locals, adding, “This is really bad for us. How long do we have to endure this? The situation is becoming unbearable.”
The collapsed towers are part of a vital high-voltage transmission line connecting the Kainji Hydropower Plant to the Birnin Kebbi Substation, a major link in Nigeria’s national power grid.
Their failure is expected to affect electricity supply in Kebbi State and nearby regions.
As of the time of this report, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had not released an official statement regarding the incident.
