A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) airstrike in Shiroro, Niger State, has killed Babangida, a well-known bandits’ sub-commander and a close ally of kingpin Dogo Gideh.
A reliable security source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Babangida died on November 18 from injuries he got during the NAF airstrike near Kurebe community, where several fighters were also neutralised.
According to the source, his death has weakened the Gideh faction, which has been behind many major attacks in Niger and nearby states.
However, intelligence reports suggest that the recent kidnapping of schoolchildren in parts of Kebbi and Niger may be a revenge attack by fighters loyal to the slain commander.
The fighters were said to be trying to demonstrate capacity after losing many members in ongoing air and ground operations.
According to reports, on November 19, community leaders from Kwaki, Buresidna, Chukuba, Buwidna, Kuchidna, Banda and Shalupe visited the Palleli home of Gideh’s mother, who was seen mourning her son’s closest aide.
A senior security source, who did not want to be named, described the killing of Babangida as a major success that has rattled the camp, but warned that the group might try more reprisals against civilians and security forces.
He said security agencies are now on high alert to prevent further attacks and protect vulnerable communities.
