The leadership of the famous Singer Market in Kano has shunned calls to shut down the market in protest over the verdict of the Appeal Court that removed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Our correspondent reports that some faceless politicians had planned to sponsor traders to shut down markets and storm the streets on Monday in protest.
But the Police in the state and sister security agencies have calmed the situation.
The Chairman of Singer Market Development Association (SIMDA), Alhaji Junaidu M. Zakaria, in a statement made available to journalists on Monday, said his leadership and members would not be part of any protest that would jeopardize peace, order and business activities in Kano.
He added that SIMDA is not in any way aware of the planned protest.
According to him, “the notice for the protest said to have been planned to be staged today (Monday), was believed to be orchestrated by some unscrupulous elements to destabilize commercial activities in the state.
“Since its creation, SIMDA is committed to the development of the Singer market and its environs. The association would not support any move capable of disrupting the relative peace being enjoyed in the commercial city.”
He appealed to traders in the grain cum beverage market to be observant and report any suspicious movement of persons or groups of persons to the leadership of the market for necessary action.
Zakaria further stated that his leadership will continue to work with the Police and other security agencies to ensure peace in Kano.
He expressed gratitude to the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Usaini Gumel for his efforts in protecting lives and property in Kano state.
