Kano metropolis and its environs may soon be cut off from power supply as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) shut down activities of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO).
The union members early yesterday picketed KEDCO headquarters in Kano and forcefully shut down all official activities indefinitely.The NUEE North-West Chairman, Ado Riruwai, while addressing journalists at the KEDCO office, decriedthe management’s failure to remit workers’ 72 months pension benefits.
Besides, Riruwai, who accused KEDCO management of continued victimisation of workers, especially the union leaders, said the electricity distribution company had been neglecting the implementation of medicare package, welfare and improved working condition for its members of staff.
MEANWHILE, when contacted, KEDCO spokesperson, Sani Bala, who denied management’s indebtedness to workers on pension, however, insisted that the management had remitted part of the claims.
According to him, the new management of KEDCO inherited a huge sum of unremitted workers’ entitlement but said that the narrative had since changed in the last eight months.
The spokesperson added that besides the inherited liability, the new management had ensured prompt remittance. Bala, who appealed to workers to remain patient in their demands, gave the assurance that the new managing director would take proactive measures to address the challenge.
