Eight people have died of Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis, CSM in some villages in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Briefing newsmen in Katsina, the state Commissioner of Health, Hajiya Mariya Bala said the CSM outbreak affected three villages in Bugaje ward.
The villages were Gangawa and Jaja where five males and three females were affected.
Radio Nigeria’s investigation revealed that over one hundred other residents of Bugaje have reported symptoms of cerebrospinal meningitis, like fever and whooping cough to local health facilities.
The Permanent Secretary at the State Ministry of Health, Dr. Kabir Mustapha, said the state government had since deployed medical personnel to the area to curtail further spread of the disease.
He announced that the state government would commence vaccination against the disease in Jibia and other areas that stand the risk of CSM outbreak.
Katsina State has experienced hot temperatures above forty degrees celsius since last month, which is a risk factor for Cerebrospinal Meningitis.
Nigeria Centre for Disease Control announced that about 15 states have reported cases of cerebro-spinal meningitis this year.
