Indications have emerged that a group of All Progressives Congress (APC) politicians in Jigawa State, headed by a senator, are plotting to impeach Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Idris Garba Kareka.

Sources close to the House of Assembly confirmed that the plot, which is gaining momentum, has unsettled the Speaker, who represents Jahun Constituency in the Assembly.

The Senator (names withheld) was accused of financing and sponsoring a campaign of calumny against the Speaker, with a view to removing him from office due to his 2023 governorship ambition.

The Guardian learnt that the senator has been making attempts to taint Garba’s reputation by coercing some members of the Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against him after failing to convince Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar to endorse his political aspiration.

A member of the party, who preferred anonymity, told The Guardian that the senator openly threatened to remove the Speaker from office at a recent meeting with some APC stakeholders, which held at his residence.

He said this followed the senator’s purported failure to coerce the Speaker to accept some gifts meant to secure his support since he sees himself as the only qualified person to take over from Badaru at the end of the governor’s tenure in 2023.

Political pundits described Garba as a diehard supporter of Governor Badaru, who would not endorse anybody from any ‘alien’ political group in the state.

Sources also confirmed that the planned impeachment had reached an advanced stage and that representative of Ringim Constituency, Aminu Sule Sankara, was allegedly spearheading and recruiting members of the Assembly to endorse the senator.

But reacting to the claims, Sankara denied knowledge of any plot to impeach the Speaker, saying that he is not aware of any plans to remove Garba.

“Honestly, what you are asking me is even news to me as I am not aware of any such move by any group,” he said.

The Guardian also learnt that the senator sees the Speaker as a threat to his political plans, due to his independent-minded views, the governor’s support and for being a trusted ally, expected to be part of the deciding factors of who becomes the next governor.

When contacted, Chairman, House Committee on Information, Hon. Mohammed Adamu (Kafin Hausa Constituency) refuted the claims and described the purported move as misleading and unfounded.

“As Chairman, House Committee on Information, the alleged plot to impeach the Speaker is fake as there is nothing of that nature. It is all fabrication meant to misinform members of the public,” he added.

But another member of the Assembly affirmed that Governor Badaru rejected the plot and expressed his total support for the Speaker.
