Muhammadu Durugu, also known as Babban Gwani, was a 19th century Hausa architect who built mosques and palaces in Bauchi, Birnin Gwari, Kano, Katsina and Zaria. Babban Gwani also built the Zaria Juma’a Mosque and the palace of the Emir of Zaria.
However, around 1837, the Emir of Zaria, Sarki Abd al-Karim ibn Abbas, seized Babban Gwani and had him executed so that no palace would ever be built to equal the one in Zaria.
