Diana was taken aback; she expected that Kyauta would flare at Bala but she seemed to be defending him. Bala was shocked too. It was abnormal for Kyauta to defend him. He expected that she would tear him to pieces; he would have preferred been torn apart at that moment then face her wrath later. With the attitude she was putting up it was hard to really predict her next action. Was she going to carry out the threat of killing him? How would she do that? Poison him or choke him while asleep?
Diana put up her usual act when it was obvious that things weren’t going her way or expected.
Diana: “what kind of friend are you,Kyauta? Aren’t you supposed to be on my side?” she burst into tears.
Kyauta with arms folded watched her smiling. Bala was angry. What an act she was putting up! He thought,
Bala: “she must be from hell,” he whispered in disgust.
Diana continued crying for five minutes and they watched her. Bala was losing his patience standing behind Kyauta. He was praying for Kyauta to act before he loses it,
Diana: “So you’re this wicked, Kyauta, eh? A man who raped your friend and instead of fighting for me you’re defending him?”
The mention of rape sent rage down Bala’s spine,
Bala: “Are you mad? Have you gone berserk? After, after…” he wanted to mention ‘seduce’ but thought Kyauta might feel offended by that statement, he quickly said, “… something must be wrong with you! You know I never raped you”
Kyauta turned to Bala,
Kyuata: “Lemme handle this,please!”
Diana was in for the shock of her life; Bala found it hard to control himself,
Bala: “You deserve a place in hell!” he went inside and sat on a chair where he could hear everything.
Kyauta faced Diana squarely,
Kyauta: “Diana, I’m not taking sides or defending him cos I want to but Bala was brave enough to admit his mistakes and apologized but you? Instead being apologetic for trying to take my man from me you keep on lying that you were raped. You are very petty,Dee. We grew up as sisters I expected that you’d always have my back but nope you turn around and go after the man you know truly loves me. Why Diana? What have I done wrong to deserve this injustice from you?”
Diana looked into her eyes not showing any form of remorse,
“You think the news of you being pregnant would tear us apart? Oh,no, you need to try harder, my dear friend. Even if the elders insist he must marry you then he must marry me first. You so poignant! The sight of you makes me nauseous!” Kyauta spat on her face.
Diana: “what? How dear you spit on me?”
Kyauta tied her head tie around her waist with her fists ready for a very good fight,
Kyauta: “Come and get beaten!”Bala ran to the middle; he wasn’t ready for a scene.
Diana: “You’ll pay for this! I’ll show to you that no one dares I, “ she did beat her chest, “Diana Atnadu!” She ran off,
Kyauta: “Go! Yes!! Go!!! You low life! Ashawo!!! Gbokogboko! Olobo-One-kobo!!!” Kyauta forced out some Yoruba languages, the dirty ones she learnt at early age, almost in tears but she fought the tears back. As she entered the room panting Bala knelt down,
Bala: “I know I have wronged you but I swear I didn’t rape her and for the pregnancy. I don’t know what to say,” tears gathered in his eyes.
Kyauta sighed, “ Please, baby, I’m so sorry!” Bala pleaded
Kyauta left where she was sitting and came to him where he knelt,
Kyauta: “stand up,” he jumped up, she looked up at him, “I would have left you if you hadn’t told me the truth but for telling me the truth I won’t leave for anyone. I’m here to stay, Bally!”
Bala stood speechless with his pupils dancing in tears; she sat and asked him to sit beside her when he did she threw her arms around his,
Bala: “What of the pregnancy?”
Kyauta: “It doesn’t change a thing. Besides someone who would lie about being raped can lie about anything…”
Bala: “…you think she isn’t pregnant?”
Kyauta still smiling,
Kyauta: “Does it matter? I’m here for you, baby!” she leaned on his shoulder as he sighed and forced out a smile, “ even if she is pregnant you wouldn’t be the first man in this village with two wives,” she laughed.
Bala didn’t find that funny,
Bala: “Two wives?” he said aloud; she smiled. The thought of getting married to Diana was irritating, “Please, I don’t want her to get pregnant oo!”
His plea sounded funny to Kyauta as she broke into a giggle,
“It isn’t funny oo!” he said
Kyauta: “I know right?” she rubbed his head, “come let’s take a stroll to clear your head!” she stood up and pulled him, “I’ve got an idea let’s go to the riverside where we made love for the first time!”
Captain Nwanze was sitting on a couch in his house reading a newspaper and smoking his tobacco when one of most trusted men came in, Maku.
Maku: “Morning, sir!” saluted and stood at an attention,
Captain Nwanze reading the paper in his hands said,
Captain Nwanze: “Easy! What of the Maigari?”
Maku: “He will be here soon, sir!”
Captain Nwanze nodded,
Maku: “Permission to fall out, sir!” Nwanze waved him away.
Captain Nwanze: “ehen, Maku,” Maku paused, “what about the girl of that day? Any news?”
Maku: “Yes,sir. Her name is Kyauta she just graduated from secondary scho….”
Captain Nwanze: “… I don’t give a flying fuck about all those details. I want her in my bed! and that’s all! I give you two weeks to do that!”
Maku: “Okay sir, ehm,…”
Captain Nwanze: “what is it?”
Maku: “she is engaged!”
Captain Nwanze: “to?”
Maku: “his name is Bala. One of the best teachers in town!”
Captain Nwanze: “Son of the soil?”Maku nodded, “Hmmm! The Mc of my ceremony?”
Captain Nwanze: “Aha, no wonder. That explains it. I saw the way he looked at me when I was staring at her. But,men, that girl is beauteous. I want her to have a taste of what I can offer. She would leave the pauper for me I know her type. She has roving eyes. I can give her the world and the pauper can only give her misery in this God forsaken village,” he hee-hawed, “what is that they say again? That teachers have their rewards in heaven right?” he laughed again, Maku forced out a laughter.
Maigari: “peace be upon this house!” he came in with his regalia.
Captain Nwanze stood up from his seat and welcomed him. He had invited him for a secret meeting. Maku disappeared as Maigari sat down.
Diana got home fuming,
Diana: “I must make sure I ruin their relationship. If I can’t have Bala, Kyauta won’t have him too! I might not be pregnant for your man now but that doesn’t mean I won’t be. An elephant doesn’t go down easily without a fight!”
In an impatient manner, she trudged around the room, “yes!” she screamed as she quickly wore her slippers and ran out of the room. In less than five minutes she was at Timothy’s door, she knocked,
Timothy: “who is that?” he opened the door yawning with shorts, “Diana! What brings you to my house!”
Timothy had been asking her out for a long time but she always turned him down,
Diana: “I want you to have me!”
She threw herself at him with the door half opened they fell on the mattress. In less than five minutes they were done. It was uninteresting and brief. Diana didn’t really enjoy the sex but she was on a mission. She stood in front of the mirror, smiling and she dressed up. Her mission was complete. Before she could finish dressing Timothy had dozed off.
Out of the room, she walked out as a champion would walk out of the ring with his medal with so much swagger.
Question: What was Diana up to? Would she get pregnant for Timothy? What was the reason for the secret meeting between Maigari and Captain Nwanze?
