A 26-year-old woman from Idah, Kogi State, simply identified as Divine, has allegedly stolen a six-week old baby in Makurdi.
She was said to have been caught later by the Nigeria Police (E) Division, Makurdi.
Divine was said to have stolen the child, whose name was given as Doochivir Ukeyima, at 26, Tony Odu Street, Gyado Villa, Makurdi; and was trying to escape when one Miss Hembadoon Tersoo, 10 years old, alerted the mother of the baby about the incident.
The mother of the child, Mrs. Doris Ukeyima, who was weeding behind the house, raised alarm, which led to the arrest of the suspected abductor.
Narrating the incident to our correspondent in Makurdi, father of the child, Mr. Ukeyima Samuel, said the incident took place on Thursday around 11 am.
“I was already at my place of work when my wife called me to come home, that somebody had stolen my child, but that the person has been arrested by vigilante in the area.
“From what I gathered, the lady came to the house through a bush path behind our house.
“My wife left the child alone in the house and was weeding the premises.
“This lady then went straight into my house and carried the baby; but unknown to her, a 10-year-old girl from my neighbour’s house was watching her.
“It was the girl who alerted my wife and she raised the alarm, leading to the arrest of the woman.”
The suspect, who is still being detained at E division, Makurdi, while narrating her involvement, stated that she was in the state for “runs.”
When asked what kind of “runs,” Divine told our correspondent that she was in Makurdi to engage in prostitution.
She explained that she was lodging at Ejja Hotel, along Gboko Road, and only came to the area to visit her friend, Blessing, who told her that she lived around the area.
She, however, could not explain what she was doing with the baby, but simply pleaded for forgiveness.
When contacted, the Command spokesperson, ASP Moses Yamu, said, “I don’t have that report yet, I will have to find out.”
