The silver-winning CHAN Eagles have stated their disappointments in the treatment meted out on them by the Presidency. As it is done in Nigeria, a place on the podium comes with the delight of a cheque but this time around, President Buhari didn’t do justice to the expectations of the CHAN Eagles who had stayed for weeks to meet the President hoping to get financial rewards for their efforts.
Several members of the team were bitter that all the President could reward them with for their meritorious efforts in Morocco was just a handshake after converging at Abuja from several parts of the nation.
“Disappointed is an understatement, we were hoping to get something meaningful from the president for our performance at CHAN, but nothing came out,” a member of the team who spoke on the condition of anonymity told Completesportsnigeria.com.
“I wonder why they organised the reception in the first place when they knew the only thing they would give us is handshake.”
Another key member of the team also echoed his anger on the President’s handshake policy.
“To say we had to wait this long for the reception makes the whole thing very painful. You can also imagine us travelling from different parts of the country to Abuja and getting nothing in the end,” the player stated.
“We fought hard for the glory of this country in Morocco and deserve better than this.
“I can tell you we are all disappointed but we have decided to move on from it.”
President Buhari also hosted the Bobsled team who created history by being the first Nigerian representatives to compete in the Winter Olympics.
Recall that the CHAN Eagles were beaten 4-0 by hosts, Morocco in the final match of the perennial competition.
