Katsina State Commissioner for Education , Prof . Halimatu Sadiya , said she believed that competence test should be conducted for teachers in the state just as Kaduna had done.
Sadiya said that her experience as an education commissioner and interactions with teachers in the state , especially those in local government areas , had made her to realise that the competency test for teachers was necessary in the state .
She said , “Left to me , I will conduct competence test for our teachers in Katsina . I have even made suggestion to the state executive on the need for the competence test .
I suggest that the state Ministry of Education should be given mandate to screen people so that we can have competent people as our teachers .
“Recently when we conducted what we called replacement test to replace some teachers who had retired or died , out of about 12 ,000 ( teachers ) who took the test , only 3, 300 of the number were able to score 35 out of 60 .
Indeed , the state of education in the state needs to be looked into . I am in full support of the competence test .” According to figures made available by the state Ministry of Education , as of 2016, the state had 26 ,201 teachers , made up of 520, makes and 5,681 females.
